# Ceramic Substrate PCB Guide

In high-power modules, IGBTs, RF/microwave, and automotive electronics, standard FR-4 and even metal-core boards struggle to deliver high thermal conductivity, strong insulation, and low thermal expansion at the same time. Ceramic substrate PCBs combine excellent thermal conductivity, high-temperature tolerance, and a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) close to that of the silicon die, making them the top choice for high-reliability power electronics. With more than 15 years in PCB manufacturing, Sunking PCB (skpcb.com) has extensive experience in ceramic substrate selection and fabrication. This guide compares the three mainstream ceramic materials: Al2O3 (alumina), AlN (aluminum nitride), and Si3N4 (silicon nitride).

Comparing the Three Ceramic Materials

The core differences between ceramic substrates come from the material's thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), mechanical strength, and cost:

MaterialThermal ConductivityCTE (ppm/°C)Mechanical StrengthRelative Cost
Al2O3 (alumina)~24 W/m·K~7MediumLow
AlN (aluminum nitride)~170–230 W/m·K~4.5MediumHigh
Si3N4 (silicon nitride)~70–90 W/m·K~3Very highHigh
  • Al2O3 (alumina): the most common and lowest cost, with moderate thermal conductivity, suitable for most mid-power applications.
  • AlN (aluminum nitride): outstanding thermal conductivity and a CTE close to silicon, ideal for high heat-flux power devices, though it is more expensive.
  • Si3N4 (silicon nitride): mid-to-high thermal conductivity but the best mechanical strength and fracture toughness, excellent for large temperature-cycling and high-reliability automotive/EV applications.

Common Ceramic Fabrication Processes

Ceramic substrate performance depends not only on the ceramic itself but also on the metallization process:

  • DBC (Direct Bonded Copper): bonds copper foil directly to the ceramic (usually Al2O3 or AlN) at high temperature. Strong current handling makes it the mainstream process for IGBT modules.
  • DPC (Direct Plated Copper): uses thin-film sputtering plus electroplating for fine, high-precision traces, suited to miniaturized, high-density packaging.
  • AMB (Active Metal Brazing): bonds copper to ceramic firmly using an active braze alloy, giving high bond strength and reliability, especially well matched to Si3N4 substrates and large temperature-cycling applications.
  • Thick-Film: prints and fires conductive/resistive pastes, suited to hybrid circuits and cost-sensitive power applications.

Typical Application Areas

  • High-power modules and IGBTs: DBC/AMB ceramic substrates handle high current and temperature with stable heat dissipation.
  • RF/microwave: low loss and stable dielectric behavior suit high-frequency circuits.
  • Automotive and new energy (EV): automotive-grade power modules prize thermal-cycling reliability, where Si3N4 with AMB has a clear advantage.
  • High-power LEDs: high-conductivity ceramics markedly lower junction temperature and extend lifetime.

Pros and Cons

Advantages:

  • Thermal conductivity far above FR-4, giving strong heat dissipation.
  • CTE close to the die, reducing thermal stress and improving reliability.
  • High-temperature tolerance, corrosion resistance, and good insulation for harsh environments.

Disadvantages:

  • Material and process costs are higher than for conventional PCBs.
  • Ceramics are relatively brittle (except Si3N4), so large-size machining needs care.
  • Design and process thresholds are higher, requiring an experienced manufacturing partner.
